Ulugbek Mirza Muhammad is Uzbek astronomer and mathematician, statesman, scientist, educator and grandson of Tamerlane. During his governing Samarkand became one of the world centers of science of Medieval.
As the ruler of Samarkand Ulugbek paid great attention to the development of education in the country. He had built wide range of schools and madrasah in Bukhara, Samarkand and other cities and patronized scholars. He had built an observatory in 1430 in the capital of the empire. Ulugbek’s science passion, its outreach and scornful attitude to religion provoked heated reactionary sheiks. He was accused of heresy and therefore was murdered in 1449.
